BOSTON (WWLP) - The Attorney General appointed a special investigator--attorney David Meier--to examine the death of a Massachusetts State Police recruit at the academy. The recruit, Enrique Delgado-Garcia, died from injuries sustained during a boxing training exercise. His family and friends, as well as a group of local senators, calling for a deeper probe into what caused his death. The Attorney General (AG) appointed David Meier due to his "deep experience in death investigations and [because he] will ensure independence and integrity in this matter." Meier is best known for leading an investigation into the Hinton Drug Lab scandal, which found that tens of thousands of people had been convicted of drug crimes based on potentially falsified evidence. The AG says her office will not be involved in the investigation and Meier will be able to independently and impartially review the case. "The Delgado-Garcia family, their community, and the public have been waiting patiently. It is now time to get to work," said Meier in a statement provided to the AG's office. Governor Healey said at a press conference that she strongly supports the AG's choice of investigators. "From the beginning I have called for an investigation of this tragic death and it's something that we owe to Delgado-Garcia's family. The public also deserves answers as well," said Healey. This latest scandal within the Massachusetts State Police comes just before Geoffrey Noble begins his tenure as the new permanent superintendent. Governor Healey said she will encourage Noble to review training practices at the academy.
