EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The Easthampton Fire Department teamed up with Baystate Health to give the gift of life on Tuesday. Blood donations are urgently needed to save lives across the state, and every contribution counts. A gift of whole blood is usually divided into red cells and plasma, so that one gift can help more than one individual. Premature infants, surgical patients, accident victims, and persons with leukemia and other diseases often require frequent blood transfusions. This drive comes at a crucial time, as Massachusetts is currently experiencing a significant blood shortage. "A lot of times our paramedics are out in the front line responding to medical emergencies and they see firsthand the dire need for blood and blood products just by giving 1 pint of blood can really save numerous lives," mentioned Easthampton Fire Chief Christopher Norris. Baystate Health is always collecting donations at their locations. Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. And there is no maximum age limit.
