RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Sincero, a Mexican-American restaurant in Richmond's Jackson Ward, will be closing its doors this Sunday a year after opening its first brick-and-mortar location. Sincero began operations in 2019 as a pop-up Mexican-American small plate, sandwich and taco spot in Hatch Local Food Hall. On Sept. 24, 2023, owners Alex Bobadilla and Karen Negvesky announced that Sincero would officially open an independent brick-and-mortar location at 404 North 2nd Street, in the building that once housed Lucy's Reserve. Just over a year later, Sincero will host its final day of service on Sunday, Sept. 29. Eight historic sites added to Virginia Landmarks Register "I never thought I would be writing this," said Sincero in a Sept. 13 Instagram post announcing the closure, adding that this decision was "extremely difficult" to make. "We went through many changes in the past 5 years," Sincero said. "Many challenges. Many difficult decisions. Many obstacles. It’s no secret this business is very brutal." The owners emphasized the impact that Sincero's supporters have made on their lives both professionally and personally -- especially the ones that have been there since the pop-up days. "While we’ve only made it to brick & mortar this past year, we were just a small pop-up for most of this business," Sincero said. "Many of you out there have been riding with us since those early days. The friendships that have come from this is something I could’ve never imagined. Friendships that go beyond this restaurant now." Owners shared their thanks to all of those who were involved with Sincero during this "wild ride." Richmond leaders move to strengthen animal cruelty penalties "Thank you to anyone that has come in to have a meal with us," Sincero said. "We are very grateful to have served Richmond our food and drinks for this long. Anyone that has ever worked with us at a pop-up, filled in, picked up a shift, helped out in any way ... Thank you." Sincero will continue with business as usual until closing time on Sunday. Dinner service will run from 5 to 10 p.m., with happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m, according to the Instagram announcement. "We invite you to stop by while we’re still open," Sincero said. "Our staff will be here and happy to take care of you. Please treat them with nothing but love. They are the real reason why we have made it this far and they are choosing to see this through with us til the end."
