SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A University of Rhode Island (URI) student accused of shoving a police officer outside a house party in Narragansett was in court Tuesday to face charges. Jake Dignam, 20, of Long Island, New York, was one of two students arrested earlier this month in the town's Bonnet Shores neighborhood. Jake Dignam Narragansett police allege Dignam and 21-year-old Cody Calkins got physical with officers who were trying to break up a large party at a Leonard Bodwell Road home on the night of Sept. 6. There were about 100 people at the party, according to police. BACKGROUND: Bodycam footage shows URI students assaulting officers Police said the situation escalated when Sgt. Christopher Riley asked to see the ID of a young-looking female who appeared to be drinking. Dignam allegedly got between the two, shoved Riley and told him to stop talking to the her. Riley tried to arrest Dignam, but police said he resisted and acted violently toward the officers as a crowd gathered around them. According to the police report obtained by 12 News, the sergeant was pushed to the ground twice before he and other officers were able to detain Dignam and Calkins, who also resisted. At one point, one of the officers struck Calkins with his flashlight after he allegedly tried to get a hold of his gun. Calkins was briefly knocked unconscious, police said, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Cody Calkins The incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras. RELATED: Documents show what Narragansett police say led to knocking out URI student Dignam pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of simple assault and battery, obstructing an officer in the execution of duty, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He was released on $2,500 personal recognizance with a pretrial hearing scheduled for Oct. 8. Calkins was arraigned on the same charges last week and also pleaded not guilty.
