RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) --Salvation Army of the Black Hills kicked off its 14th year of Shop with a Cop today. This event aims to help kids feel ready to go for the current school year. "One, get them prepared for the school year. Helps them feel confident when they go to school. Helps their self esteem because they are getting new clothing, not used clothing and also helps to build the relationship between the kids and the law enforcement as well," Major Vangie O'Neil said. This year, 57 students from multiple schools are taking part. "I like my backpack because it's kind of clear and it would match my pants, what I'm going to wear for picture day. It's US polos and it says US Polos on my bag," Crazy Horse Student Gabrel said. Lennox may be sewer option for new men’s prison by: Rae Yost John Long retired from law enforcement, but continues to help facilitate this event each year. "It's huge for our kids to have a relationship with law enforcement, especially on the reservation. You know, to build a relationship through our shop with a cop program, our Christmas program that we have on the reservation with the Salvation Army. It's just huge for our kids to have a positive role model on the reservation and being in law enforcement for as many years as I was, I think it's something that's needed every year, and we'll do it every year," Retired Law Enforcement Officer John Long said. "Not just for building the kids' self esteem, and getting them new clothing, and building relationships with the law enforcement, but just to let the people in the community know that there is someone there that cares and wants to help them. You know, 57 kids with smiles on their faces, that's a pretty good day's work," O'Neil said. Shop with a Cop will continue tomorrow with students from Rapid City as well.
