ELWOOD, Ind. — U.S. Representative Victoria Spartz has introduced a bill to rename a post office in Elwood in honor of a fallen police officer. According to a press release, Spartz, who represents Indiana's fifth district, wants to name the post office located at 119 North Anderson Street in Elwood "Officer Noah Jacob Shahnavaz Post Office Building." Shahnavaz died after conducting a traffic stop in July 2022. Carl Roy Webb Boards II — a 44-year-old from Anderson — allegedly shot Shahnavaz 36 times during the stop. Carl Boards II is currently slated to go on trial next year. Carl Roy Webb Boards, II Shahnavaz was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Mercy in Elwood after the shooting. He was transferred to an Indianapolis-area hospital before he died. In August 2022, a mural was created to honor Shahnavaz. He had joined the police academy 11 months before he died. Prior to joining EPD, Shahnavaz served in the military for five years. Officer Noah Shahnavaz “Noah was a true hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation," Spartz wrote in a prepared statement. "We must always remember the fallen and carry on the torch of freedom." Spartz's bill in its entirety is available here.
