BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The North Dakota League of Cities (NDLC) has named Wishek the winner of its coveted 2024 City of the Year Award. Each year, the City of the Year award recognizes the efforts of cities, leaders, and specific citizens who have contributed to making their cities outstanding in multiple ways. Wishek is home to roughly 839 residents, and was chosen for the award due to its unceasing drive to improve the quality of life of those who call the area home. Over recent years, the city has completed multiple transformational projects to improve its infrastructure — such as new fire hydrants, adjustments to water and sewer systems, sidewalk improvements, and funding for decorative lighting. A similar level of improvement can be found in its recreational opportunities, which include camping spots, a pickleball court, and a splash pad, as well as new docks and upgraded playground equipment. North Dakota joins states working to raise college completion rates Wishek celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2023, and was also recognized as a Tree City and a recipient of the state's Rural Community Enhancement Program. These accomplishments, according to city representatives, have bred an increased level of community pride and engagement among its residents — which ensures that the community will continue to grow over time. “Wishek knows what it means to be a community,” said NDLC President Jim Neubauer. “Their volunteer-driven efforts and initiatives show the strength and resilience of their residents. This recognition is an indication of the hard work and dedication of the entire Wishek community.” City Councilmember Whitney Lipp and Auditor Nary Vickers accepted the award on behalf of Wishek as a whole, and expressed gratitude for the recognition while reaffirming their commitment to community development. Vickers was also awarded this year's Leadership Excellence for an Appointed Official Award. “The achievements of Wishek reflect a community that is truly committed to progress,” said NDLC Executive Director Matt Gardner. “Wishek is a true example of a thriving community for other communities across the state.” For more information about the NDLC's annual conference, visit this page.
