A styrene leak has spurred concerns of a possible explosion in the Cleves and Whitewater Township areas, local leaders confirmed Tuesday afternoon.A spokesperson for the Central Railroad of Indiana said the company was notified at around 1 p.m. that one of its tanker cars was venting styrene near the intersection of US-50 and OH-128. Crews responded to the scene and began applying water to the tanker car.Little Miami Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Siefke said in a press conference just before 6 p.m. that there is "potential for an explosion" if the material in the tanker car heats up. Siefke said representatives from the railroad, hazmat crews and fire officials are working to cool the tanker."I am more concerned knowing what we know now I don't have all the details, the experts are doing their tasks right now," Siefke said. Officials worried of 'possible explosion' after styrene leak in Cleves, Whitewater Twp. areasThe Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency said those within a half-mile radius of the railyard by US-50, OH-128 and Valley Junction Road should remain out of the area. Residents outside the immediate half-mile radius but still nearby are encouraged to stay indoors. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, styrene is a colorless, flammable liquid used to make plastics and rubber. Styrene is highly volatile.The CDC reports that people may experience tiredness, slowed reaction times, concentration problems and balance issues if they are exposed to styrene concentrations more than 1,000 times higher than the levels normally found in the environment. At this time, Siefke said they have received zero reports of injuries. Classes have been canceled for Wednesday. A spokesperson for Kroger said their store near the leak is currently closed. The Miami Township branch of the library is also closed.A shelter was opened for the public at the Whitewater Community Center at 6125 Dry Fork Road as well as at the Miami Township Hall at 112 S. Miami Avenue.
