Eastlake City Council President James Overstreet is next in line as mayor in light of former Mayor David Spotton’s recent resignation. Spotton’s resignation went into effect Sept. 23 after he had been with the city for nearly nine years, eight of those as a council person and eight months as the mayor. Related Articles Local News | Eastlake Mayor David Spotton resigns “We extend our heartfelt gratitude for his dedicated service to Eastlake and wish him a long, and fulfilling future,” said Judy Moran, administrative assistant to the mayor. “At the same time, we warmly welcome our new mayor.” Everyone at City Hall is excited to collaborate with Overstreet as they strive to advance Eastlake together, Moran said. Eastlake Law Director Joseph R. (Randy) Klammer has expressed that he wishes the residents had a chance to see Spotton succeed, adding that he is a “wonderful man.” “I just feel terrible,” Klammer said. “He had some great ideas for some city projects that would have been little expense to the city.” According to Spotton’s resignation letter, he said he can no longer serve the residents without an all-in team approach from council. “I stepped up in the time of loss and need for the greater good of the city,” Spotton said in his letter. “This is a sacrifice of my time with my family and friends that, without the team approach, I am no longer willing to make.” Prior to assuming the mayoral position in January after former Mayor and Safety Director Dennis Morley died, as well as serving on council, Spotton was a full-time police officer at Lakeland Community College for 27 years and coordinator of the motorcycle safety program for 24 of those years.
