CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Eight historic sites throughout the state of Virginia have been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register. According to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR), one of the sites is the Parrish Hill School located in Charles City County. This school provided education to Black students who were racially segregated during the Jim Crow era. Another site being added is also located in Charles City County -- the Mica School, which also provided education for Black children during the Jim Crow era. It was constructed in 1915 after a request from local parishioners and closed in 1951, according to DHR. The other sites are located in Gloucester County, Frederick County, the City of Winchester, the town of Big Stone Gap in Wise County, the City of Galax, the City of Lynchburg and Tazewell County. The sites were approved by the Commonwealth's Board of Historic Resources during a public meeting on Sept. 19 of this year. For more information about the DHR visit the department's website.
