Christy Davis, the driving force behind Mom Made Market Hawai‘i, shared her journey of starting this event. “I can't even remember the year that we started,” Davis said. “It was a little serendipitous. It began with me reaching out on Instagram to coordinate with the international Mommy Market program. When COVID hit, it eventually just kind of got turned over to me.” Davis’s passion for supporting small businesses resonated throughout the market. She emphasized the importance of bringing together mothers who share the same entrepreneurial spirit. “When all of us get together, we feel this camaraderie and community that you just don't get anywhere else,” she explained. “They understand the struggles you're going through, balancing family life and pursuing your passions.” The Mom Made Market encouraged shoppers to “shop small, shop local, shop mom-made”. On Sept. 28, the market transformed the mall into a bustling hub of creativity and entrepreneurship. Davis described the setup. She said, “We basically took over any open space in the mall. From California Pizza Kitchen to the theaters, you will see mom vendors popping up.” Shoppers found an eclectic mix of products, ranging from clothing and accessories to handmade goods. “We had about 40 vendors selling everything from housewares to keiki wear and jewelry,” Davis added. This variety made it easy for families to find unique gifts and treats while supporting local artisans. Ezy Paeste, the General Manager of Kahala Mall, echoed the excitement. “We are thrilled to host this exciting three-day sidewalk sale featuring unique specialty products made or designed right here in Hawaii,” he said. “Shoppers can enjoy incredible deals at their favorite store pop-ups and explore a variety of small, local vendors from the Mom Made Market.” The event also included popular vendors like Kukui, Meristic, Onepa‘a Hawai‘i and King’s Sweet Things. Davis pointed out that these mom-owned businesses offer not just products but also a chance for connections and collaborations. “You just feel safe together,” she noted, highlighting the sense of support that develops among the vendors. As the market continued to grow, Davis expressed her commitment to fostering relationships with nonprofit organizations as well. “Most markets we do have a give-back component,” she explained. “For our upcoming November market, we’re partnering with the Make Lemonade project to help raise money for cancer patients.” Shoppers interested in supporting local businesses or nonprofits could easily connect with Davis and her team through their Instagram account. “The best way to connect is to reach out via DM on Instagram,” she said, inviting new entrepreneurs to join the community. The atmosphere during the Mom Made Market was electric, filled with laughter, creativity, and the shared joy of supporting local businesses. “You wouldn't necessarily think that it would be so important, but it truly is,” Davis remarked. “It's all about building a community where everyone feels valued and understood.” As families explored the market, they found more than just unique products; they discovered a supportive network of mom entrepreneurs who were passionate about their crafts and their families. Davis noted the importance of these connections. “There’s a lot of collaboration that happens out of talking with someone that you have that much in common with,” she said. With its focus on community, creativity, and entrepreneurship, the Mom Made Market at Kahala Mall not only provided an opportunity for local vendors to showcase their products but also created a space where families could come together and celebrate the spirit of small business ownership. As the event concluded, attendees left with bags full of treasures and hearts full of inspiration, eagerly anticipating the next gathering of this dynamic community.
