RODANTHE, N.C. (WAVY) — Cleanup continues after two Rodanthe homes that had been side-by-side collapsed into the ocean hours apart Friday. (Photo - National Park Service at Cape Hatteras National Seashore) (Photo - National Park Service at Cape Hatteras National Seashore) The National Park Service at Cape Hatteras National Seashore said the owner of the first home that collapsed Friday, at 23001 G A Kohler Court, and some of his family, along with many visitors and community members "have significantly contributed to the cleanup." Photos: Second house collapses in the Outer Banks The second home to collapse, at 23009 G A Kohler Court, immediately south of the first home, "reportedly caused damages" to a home at 23039 G A Kohler Court, which the park service said the homeowner has hired a contractor to remove, if possible. It said elevated tides and other factors have kept it from being removed preemptively. Cape Hatteras National Seashore confirms second house collapses in Rodanthe Seashore employees have supplemented contractor cleanups, according to the park service, by hand collecting and forming numerous piles of debris above the high tide line. That followed the removal of more than 24 National Park Service pickup truckloads of debris collected along 16 miles of beach to a staging area away from the site of the collapses over the past two days. Before cleanup efforts, "varying levels of debris had been observed to the south of the house collapse sites for more than 20 miles." The park service said the debris removal contractor and Seashore employees would continue to clean the sites of the home collapses this week, but added that there is no timetable to restore the beach due to the possibility of more debris washing ashore or becoming exposed as sand shifts.
