(FOUNTAIN, Colo.) — 10 people, including one child, and five pets are displaced after a fire in a mechanical room at a fourplex on Tuesday morning, Sept. 24, according to the Fountain Fire Department (FFD). Division Chief Jared Cass of FFD told FOX21 News that crews were called to a fire in the mechanical room of a fourplex, located at 7170 Alegre Circle, which is in the area of Mesa Ridge Parkway and Highway 85-87, at around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Crews arrived just before 6:25 a.m. and found a working fire in the mechanical room which they were able to put out quickly and keep contained to the room. According to Division Chief Cass, those living at the fourplex were displaced because the utilities to the building had to be shut off. He added that fortunately, there were no injuries to the people inside or fire crews. Members from the Red Cross responded to the scene on Tuesday to help those impacted with housing needs and food. As of Tuesday morning at around 10:30 a.m., Division Chief Cass said he wasn't sure of the timeline for when the people living at the fourplex could return to their homes. Investigators with FFD are looking into what caused the fire, but Division Chief Cass said, this is a good reminder to all homeowners to make sure they have working smoke detectors. He added that smoke detectors are what initially alerted those living at the fourplex to the fire, and if they hadn't, he said this could have been much worse. If community members have questions about their smoke detectors, Division Chief Cass said to reach out to their local fire departments.
