BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A Baton Rouge building that still stands today has historic significance for its role in Louisiana's civil rights history. The brick art deco-style Kress Building at 445 Third St. is a stop on the Civil Rights Trail. It's the site of a March 1960 sit-in, one of the most significant civil rights events in Baton Rouge and Louisiana. The National Register of Historic Places Nomination form said the Kress Building is significant on the state level because it was the site of a major civil rights movement event in Louisiana. Documents said seven Southern University students conducted a sit-in at the building on Third Street on March 28, 1960, after being asked to be served at the "white only" lunch counter. "The seven protesters spent less than six hours in jail before being released on bond-$1,500 per person for a total of $10,500," the nomination form said. Southern University Baton Rouge campus still uses historic buildings on National Register The students went back to Southern's campus after leaving jail for a "triumphant procession" with their lawyer Johnnie Jones and the Rev. T. J. Jemison. According to the nomination form, they were met with nearly the entire student body and in an address from Jemison, he praised the sit-ins and asked students to contribute to a bail fund. Documents said other sit-ins took place at a drug store and the Greyhound bus terminal and a "prayer meeting" was held at the Louisiana State Capitol with the student body. "At this point, the story of the Baton Rouge sit-ins became inextricably linked with that of Southern University," the nomination form said. Latest News What's a National Blue Ribbon School?
