(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand HAMILTON — So often when a player scores a celebrated goal there’s the tendency to sit back and savor the adoration. Not Caroline Rotteveel. As a freshman, she scored the game-winning goal in the Mercer County Tournament championship in overtime to give Lawrence its first and only county title. Now a senior, that goal only drove Rotteveel to work harder and take her career to the next level. “That goal proved to me that I could make myself a better player at Lawrence,’’ said Rotteveel, on Monday, after she scored a career high five goals in a 7-0 win over Steinert in a Colonial Valley Conference game. “The goal symbolized for me gaining confidence as a player and earning my spot on the team,’’ added Rotteveel. “After my freshman season I felt like I had something to prove and I felt I had to come back stronger and come back as a more of a significant part of the team and I feel like I did that and I really found my spot.’’ Headed to Colgate University next fall, Rotteveel has fortified her spot as one of the premier hockey players in the region. She has 74 career goals and 39 assists for 187 career points. She wouldn’t change a minute of it. “It has been amazing,’’ Rotteveel stated. “It has been a lot of working hard in the summer and the preseason and working hard in the season. We are always working together as a team and even if we don’t win we are still motivated for the next game and motivated to win. Coach (Megan) Errico has created such a great environment and we all enjoy it.’’ Besides her coaches and teammates, there’s another player who had a huge impact on Rotteveel’s attitude toward the game. That’s Talia Schenck, now a junior at Princeton University, who is the all-time leading scorer in the county, the conference and fourth all-time in the nation with 244 goals. Schenck also had the assist on Rotteveel’s MCT clinching goal. “She was the most confident player that I have ever seen and she plays with intensity,’’ said Rotteveel. “The fact that she was able to trust me as a freshman made me want to become a more confident player and be able to take charge on the field.’’ The Cardinals at 4-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Colonial Division this season, and Rotteveel has kept the program among the best since Schenck left for Princeton. “When she left I felt I needed to take over and become the main scorer for the  team,’’ Rotteveel stated. “This whole experience has been so much fun. I have such great fiends and such great coaches it’s been the best environment to be in,’’ Besides dazzling rivals with her skills, Rotteveel has the respect and admiration of her coach. “She is a workhorse and she loves the game and is so skilled,’’ said Errico, the Lawrence coach. “She is an incredible leader and she worked so hard to get better. She has a great style and the girls work good around her.’’ Rotteveel now wants to do everything possible to make this, her senior season, a memorable one. “Senior year is super important to me because I’m playing with seven other seniors and we have been together for four years,’’ stated Rotteveel. “I feel like we embody the team and we have carried on the legacy.  It’s important for us to keep the energy and the momentum going.’’ The other seniors are Tess Adolf, Emily Burns, Riley Evans, Isabella Margolis, Mia Quattrochi, Bella Sannella and Peyton Valentino. Saying goodbye to coaches, teammates and friends won’t be easy when the final horn sounds on a great scholastic career for Rotteveel. “I came in freshman year and had no idea of what to expect,’’ recalled Rotteveel.  “I was new to the district in seventh grade, so I didn’t know much about the high school program, so coming I didn’t realize how huge this program was going to be a part of my life. I know I’m ready for the next step but it’s hard to let go of these four years and  it’s hard to let go of my teammates and the coaches.’’
