DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Two officers involved in the Karen Read trial are now facing disciplinary actions for violating their department’s policies. Read was on trial for the death of her boyfriend John O’Keefe, a Boston police officer. Her trial ended in a mistrial, with work on the retrial well underway for early next year. Another Massachusetts State Police officer is facing discipline following the trial. Sergeant Yuri Bukhenik is accused of failing to supervise a subordinate for sending inappropriate text messages related to the case, and not properly documenting them with the police department. This comes after Trooper Michael Proctor was relieved of duty following Read’s trial back in July. Bukhenik supervised Proctor over his behavior during the Read investigation. According to our affiliate, WCVB, Proctor was questioned about messages he sent during trial, including allegedly calling Read a “whack job.” He was also accused of drinking on duty while conducting interviews about the Read investigation. According to a new personnel order from MA State Police, Bukhenik was required to give up five days of leave. The order said around August 17 of 2022, Bukhenik “failed to properly supervise and/or counsel a subordinate for sending inappropriate correspondence regarding an ongoing investigation.” It went on to say between July 15 and October 15 of 2022 Bukhenik “failed to properly utilize the employee evaluation system.” Read had faced charges of second degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol, and leaving a scene of personal injury and death. Her defense is looking to have several of the charges dropped as prosecutors are looking to retry this case. The second trial is scheduled for January 27. Categories: News
