Six weeks go until Election Day still leaves time for another presidential debate. That’s what Donald Trump thought last month when he accepted an NBC debate for tomorrow night. The problem was that Kamala Harris never said yes to the Sept. 25 NBC faceoff, only agreeing to the ABC debate on Sept. 10. (Trump also said yes to a Fox News debate on Sept. 4.) Only after she did well in her first outing against Trump two weeks ago, did Harris say that she was ready for more. But having fared poorly with his completely untrue digression into migrants eating cats and dogs, Trump doesn’t want to do more. This was predictable, which is why we urged both candidates to agree to multiple debates before the first one. So tomorrow on NBC is out (as was the Fox debate), but along comes CNN with a Oct. 23 invitation to an Atlanta debate, the same place and same rules as the June 27 showdown where Joe Biden’s campaign collapsed. Harris says yes, but Trump begs off as early voting has started. Well, the lower half of the tickets, JD Vance and Tim Walz, are squaring off in a week, despite early voting and on Saturday, just as Harris was accepting CNN and Trump was saying “it’s too late,” Vance was asked: “would you be open to a second debate, depending on how the first one goes?” Vance replied: “Well, first of all, I’d love to have a second debate. We’ve actually offered Tim Walz a second debate, and they’ve totally rejected it.” While there has never been more than a single VP debate before, there has always been at least two for the tops of the tickets, which is what we need this year. Remember, it was Harris who was the wrong party to not shake on two debates last month; now Trump is the one who is depriving the voters of another chance to see him and Harris again. But Trump has changed his mind before and so there’s hope he’ll come around. And speaking of changing plans, we really wish that Harris reconsiders her skipping the Al Smith Dinner. This is the 79th annual event hosted in Manhattan by New York’s Catholic cardinal, currently Tim Dolan. The dinner honors the former governor and presidential candidate and raises money for charities. Since 1960, it has been the tradition for both major party nominees to attend to make jokes at their own expense in white-tie, putting aside the rivalries and bitterness for a good cause. But Harris says that she can’t make the Oct. 17 dinner, as she’ll be out campaigning. That wasn’t an issue this past Sunday night, where Harris came to Manhattan to raise money. But that wasn’t for charity, it cash for her own campaign, hauling in $27 million. Madam Vice President, you have a sense of humor, please come back to New York and put it to use for a worthy goal. At the last presidential Al Smith Dinner in 2016 (2020 was virtual during COVID) Trump sounded more sour than funny, but he says he will be there next month, as he should be. The cardinal should keep a seat open on the dais for Harris.
