SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- California Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a 147-page lawsuit suing ExxonMobil over its alleged deception into plastic recycling. “While many of us hear ExxonMobil and think of the gas pump, the company is the world’s largest producer of polymers, basically the building blocks of plastic that become single use plastic waste, and the largest refiner and marketer of petroleum products in the US. It turns its fossil fuel into tiny plastic pellets that other companies mold into the single use plastic we all know and use -- bottles, utensils, food containers," said California Attorney General Bonta. Super small pieces of plastic are invading human brains, scientists say Bonta calls it a decades-long campaign of deception as he says our coastline is swimming in plastic. “What solution does ExxonMobil give us? Plastic recycling -- a farese, a lie, a deceit. Since the 70s Exxon has known the truth about plastic pollution and recycling, and still publicly promotes the myth that plastic recycling is the answer. ExxonMobil knows that the vast majority of plastic products are not and likely cannot be recycled.” Bonta says in the United States, only 5 percent of recycled items are actually recycled and the rest goes to the landfill. “Recycling doesn’t really work in this stage.” Raccoon roundworm: What to know about the parasite that infected 2 in California The greenwashing and global impacts of plastics is the expertise of Scripps Institution of Oceanography Researcher Dmitri Dehan. "It’s a very common practice that you promise you are doing recycling, greenwashing... You believe that recycling is good for the environment, and one would think that if you recycle x amount of plastic that you would cut x amount of plastic from the primary production, which is not the case," said Dehan. California bills to ban plastic ‘reusable’ shopping bags head to Newsom He hopes this lawsuit not only sparks a change, but brings more attention to plastics, in everything. “Protecting yourself, it's impossible at this stage. We might be breathing microplastics right now as we speak. Look at what you buy, look at the label of the clothing that you buy, is it made of polyester?”  ExxonMobil released the following statement to FOX 5/KUSI in regards to the lawsuit:
