MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- County Commissioners approve proposal to give the Shelby County Sheriff's Office $10 million for jail repairs. The decision came after an 8-4 vote in favor of providing the funds. $5 million will come from COVID-19 funding and the rest from the capital improvement fund. In response to the commissioners' decision, Sheriff Floyd Bonner issued the following statement: “I am disappointed that the County Commission did not provide the full amount needed for the emergency repairs. I will need to review the situation and determine which repairs can be prioritized, rather than addressing all of the jail's needs at once.” Sheriff Bonner had asked commissioners for $16.4 million to complete the repairs. On September 9, county commissioners voted 7-6 against giving the jail $15 million for repairs. Commissioners vote against funding emergency jail repairs Prior to that vote, the SCSO posted a video to social media detailing their safety concerns. “Our other problems you’ve heard us speak about – doors that won’t lock, inmates are literally booby trapping doors so they can sleep at night,” Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner said in the video. They made their pleas heard before commissioners as well. “We can not secure the inmates in a manner that we need to do on a daily basis,” Officer Donna Echols said. “It’s just very unsafe in the jail." During that meeting, SCSO provided a breakdown of where the $15 million would go. The bulk of that money would go to equipment maintenance, contracted for a little more than $14 million. The rest of the money would go towards items like equipment, construction materials, and more.
