MENASHA, Wis. (WFRV) - Community members attended a board meeting in Menasha Monday afternoon to advocate for the Barlow Planetarium, Weis Earth Science Museum, and Communication Arts Center. These facilities' future is unclear after UW-Oshkosh officials announced that the Fox Cities campus would close at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Weather cancels Fox Cities Marathon, but doesn’t take away runners’ purpose For the first time since the announcement in June, Menasha Mayor Austin Hammond addressed community concerns about the closure. "With the campus closing, we will be losing revenue that we get each and every year, which will have a negative impact on the city of Menasha, so I came here to offer my support for folks that have different ideas and are passionate," explained Mayor Hammond. He also encouraged community members to reach out to board members. Winnebago County Board Supervisor for District 3 Walt Ulbricht also said the next step is to have the public's continued support and voice those opinions to local leaders. "The campus itself has been here for more than 60 years," stated Ulbricht. "It's a part of the Fox Valley that's really under threat, but there are wonderful, positive opportunities if we cooperate and if we have the vision to move forward." During the meeting, several volunteers and community members stated the significance of the Weis Earth Science Museum and the unique experience it has provided the Fox Cities and surrounding areas since its opening in November 2002. Cindy Duckert has volunteered at the museum since its opening day and addressed the board of Trustees, saying the Museum has taught Wisconsinites so much about the state's history and has played a vital role in the community's growth. Duckert was also a personal friend of Leonard and Donna Weis, who provided the foundation with a financial gift for the museum’s inception. Scott Schaefer is the Interim Museum Director for the Weis Earth Science Museum. He said losing the museum would mean losing all the treasures that come with it. "It's a classroom that someone like me has all of these teaching tools around to help instruct people as to why this state is so unique." Classes at UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities will end in June 2025, and the campus will officially close the following December.
