INDOT shares US Highway 30 corridor plans

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Indiana Department of Transportation or INDOT hosted a public hearing on the U.S. 30 Corridor Improvements Project.
The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety in the area between U.S. 30 and Stahlhut Road. The project would require the acquisition of around 129 acres of land for the proposed construction. This comes with a number of changes to corridor intersections. The intersection of Stahlhut Road and U.S. 30 would close. INDOT hopes to add a diverging diamond interchange at U.S. 30 and Flaugh Road. The O'Day intersection may be replaced with an overpass; this will remove access to U.S. 30. INDOT also proposed removing the traffic signal at U.S. 30 and Kroemer Road, due to its high rate of crashes.
"Our stats show that by making these improvements it's going to reduce the number of crashes," said INDOT Public Relations Director, Hunter Petroviak. "It's going to reduce the number of people injured. And it's going to reduce the number of people potentially killed at these intersections."
The traffic signal will be replaced with a median, allowing traffic to only turn right onto or off of U.S. 30. There will be no left turn option if vehicles are headed on or off I-69. The estimated project cost is over $70,000,000. Construction would wrap up by the end of 2026.
