BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — On any given day, there are more than 650,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States. Some states have more unhoused individuals than others, and some states help them more than others. A new study by SmileHub that tried to figure out which states help homeless people the most placed North Dakota third on the list. The study looked at 20 different measures, ranging from the food insecurity rate to preventative policies each state has in place. The measures fell into three different categories. North Dakota placed first in food & health support, and third in shelters & housing support. What kept the Peace Garden State from being at the top of the list is placing 39th in homeless youth support. Bismarck correctional facility to host new rehabilitative program North Dakota has about 800 homeless people, of which an estimated 30%, or about 240, are under 18, according to the state government's 10-year plan to end homelessness. Three years ago, in September 2021, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the North Dakota Continuum of Care (CoC) a $1,975,377 Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) grant to try and address the issue of youth homelessness in the Peace Garden State. Above North Dakota in the ranking are Connecticut and Illinois, who are first and second in shelters & housing support. They are also both in the top 20 in homeless youth support. The bottom three on the list are Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina. They are all bottom five in food & health support, and are bottom 15 in shelters and housing support as well.
