WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- DC Circulator workers and their supporters took their pleas to the steps of the Wilson Building on Monday in an attempt to save the jobs of employees who will be let go when bus service ends this year. The crowd urged Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to have Metrobus take over when the Circulator shuts down operations on Dec. 31. "Just be fair. That's it," said Raymond Jackson, president of ATU Local 689, which represents the workers. DDOT to hold public meeting ahead of DC Circulator service ending WMATA, which operates Metrobus, already said it will increase service on some of the Circulator routes and has interviewed some employees. Jackson wants all of them hired. "These are the same workers who a few years ago fought for their rights for fair wages and for benefits, fair benefits," Jackson said. "And then they have them. It's like, this is your punishment for fighting for what we thought was fair." DDOT announced in late July the decision to eliminate the Circulator's service after its funding was cut. Neither WMATA nor the Mayor's Office responded to DC News Now's requests to comment.
