ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The fall season is finally upon us and for most, that means enjoying cooler temperatures, partaking in fall activities and watching the leaves change their colors. However, as those leaves change color and begin to fall, they could potentially pose a danger to drivers during this season, especially if they are wet. "Wet leaves can be just as slick as ice. We talk so much in the wintertime about how important it is to be careful in icy conditions. Wet leaves can create the very same conditions for a driver. And obviously those can have tragic consequences," says Mark Gruba, who is a communications specialist at Triple A. Wet leaves are not the only major concern when driving during the fall season. Gruba says that deer can also pose a danger to drivers as well.  “Deer are out and about. They are moving, they tend to move in groups as opposed to individually,” he says. “It’s really important for drivers as they go not to just be looking at the road in front of them but scanning the sides of the roadways as well because deer will be there and dart out onto the roadway at the last minute and that creates a hazardous condition for drivers.” Although the two primary concerns for driving during this season can be wet leaves and deer, there are still other things drivers need to be on alert for.  "This time of year, there are so many things that drivers need to be looking out for. Just in the last week, we've seen some fog out there, the days are getting shorter so people are driving in darker conditions more often," Gruba says. When a driver is faced with any one of these concerns, Gruba says the first thing to do is to slow down. “The first order of business is slow down. Leave extra space between you and the other vehicles on the roadway. If you do find yourself sliding on wet leaves, don’t panic. Resist the temptation to slam on the brakes. Instead, steer in the direction you want to go, and release the gas pedal to decelerate,” he says. Click here to learn about more driving tips for the fall season.
