SCRIBA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The state's largest and second largest nuclear power plants were tripped offline the morning of Monday, Sept. 23, after a small fire, the reactors' owner tells NewsChannel 9. In a statement, a spokesperson for Constellation writes: "Nine Mile Point Unit 2 and FitzPatrick Unit 1 tripped offline automatically this morning due to an electrical issue and Nine Mile Point personnel extinguished a small fire on an electric breaker." The issue is clearly visible on a graph showing the state's fuel supply. At around 7:23 a.m., nuclear-sourced power plummeted to around 2,100 megawatts. Immediately, other sources restored the state's grid, including natural gas, electric, other fossil fuels, and hydro. Source: New York Independent System Operator The company's statement continued: "All systems performed as designed, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the electrical issue and fire are under investigation. The units will be returned to service following any needed repairs, inspections and testing."
