HANFORD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Hanford's annual Moon Festival celebrating local Asian history and culture may be on a multi-year hiatus, but this September, the Carnegie Museum is hosting a tribute to support its return. According to officials with the Carnegie Museum of Kings County, for more than 40 years, the Moon Festival was celebrated the first weekend of October in Hanford's China Alley. Arianne Wing, the board president of the China Alley Preservation Society says that COVID-19 and the arson fire at the Taoist Temple Museum in 2021 have prevented the event from returning since 2019. Woman identified in connection to Taoist Temple fire: ‘She really wiped out a whole chunk of history’ Organizers say the free tribute event will feature performances by the Cal Poly Lion Dancers and the Fresno Gumyo Taiko drummers. “Kids love interacting with the lion dancers and the lions are so gentle with them,” Preservation Society board member Steve Banister said. There will be lessons on the Japanese art of paper folding and origami and Bonsai displays. Organizers say visitors will also be able to enjoy the Carnegie Museum’s exhibition celebrating local Asian history and culture. 6-months of rent paid for businesses at this Fresno Chinatown location The China Alley Preservation Society says they will have a Taoist Temple gift shop booth and information on how visitors can help restore China Alley - the Moon Festival will return to China Alley after the Taoist Temple Museum restoration is complete and the artifacts damaged by the fire are conserved. The tribute festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Carnegie Museum from noon until 5 p.m. on 109 E. Eighth St. Admission to the event is free; admission to the museum is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 12. There is a maximum entry fee of $10 for families.
