MANHATTAN (KSNT) - Kansas State University quarterback Avery Johnson is working to do some good for a high school mentor. Johnson's former principal at Maize High School, Chris Botts, is battling cancer again, after being deemed cancer free in 2022. Last week, Johnson started a fundraiser on Champsraise.com with the goal of raising $20,000. After the help from K-State fans and even some Brigham Young University fans, he quickly surpassed his initial goal. Johnson told 27 News it's important to help Botts, because of how much he's helped Johnson. "So being able to give back in any way I can definitely makes me feel a lot better as a person to be able to give back to somebody who needs it and somebody who deserves it just as much as he does. The new fundraising goal is set at $40,000. It's a goal they might soon reach. The current total is more than $32,000. To donate to the fundraiser, click here. For more local news, click here.
