BOSTON, Mass. (SHNS)--Climate protestors chained themselves across the Gen. Hooker Entrance entrance gates on Monday afternoon, shutting down one of the two public entrances to the State House and saying they would not move until they are removed by the police or until the state bans new fossil fuel infrastructure. Legislation to overhaul siting and permitting in an effort to advance clean energy projects is hung up in a conference committee. That bill does not include the ban on fossil fuel infrastructure sought by activists. Mass. offshore wind prices about to reset Climate activism group Extinction Rebellion has staged protests over the course of this legislative session in the House and Senate chambers that resulted in arrests, and distributed literature during daily standouts on the Hooker Entrance steps. One of the protesters, Patricia O'Hagan of Lincoln, said it was her first protest with Extinction Rebellion and that she was driven to chain herself to the Hooker gate and block the entryway because of "the level of inaction" she's seeing on climate policy. "I mean, yeah, I have better things to do with my time. I'm a nurse," she told the News Service. "I could be looking after people. I could be doing whatever I want. But if our leaders won't lead on this, and the Legislature didn't sign the climate bill -- we can't wait another legislative session for them to do it." Allen McGonagill, one of the protesters who was not chained up to the gate, addressed onlookers and described past fruitless protests. "Every day they sent letters to Gov. Healey. Hundreds and hundreds of people have taken shifts, taken time off of work to be here and represent the need to stop new fossil fuels in Massachusetts. And nothing has happened. There has been no response by Maura Healey to the people that have been standing out here for well over a year," McGonagill said.
