PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence middle school teacher appeared in court Monday morning on charges of first-degree sexual assault and producing child pornography. Joseph Gannon, 50, of Warwick, is a certified general science teacher for grades 7-12 at Nathanael Greene Middle School, according to the R.I. Department of Education’s public educator verification portal. Target 12 confirmed that Gannon was arrested Friday at the school "in response to allegations of criminal misconduct," per a letter from Providence Public Schools. The letter said that Gannon was placed on administrative leave, and the district filed a suspected child abuse or neglect report with the R.I. Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). MORE: Police arrest Providence teacher for child porn, sexual assault Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told 12 News the victim came into their station and made a complaint, prompting an investigation that resulted in Gannon's arrest. Perez said the incident happened six years ago and the victim is now an adult. While the complaint does not specify the date of the alleged offenses, the accusations were reported on Sept. 19 of this year. At Gannon's arraignment, he waived the reading of the facts of the case and no plea was entered on either charge. The judge ordered Gannon held without bail and issued a no-contact order between him and the victim. Gannon is due back in court on Sept. 30 for a bail hearing.
