PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- After more than a week without internet, the Providence Public School District says schools are starting to get back online. Target 12 obtained a copy of a letter sent by the district's Deputy Superintendent of Operations, Zack Scott, to families on Sunday. Scott said beginning on Monday, students and staff members would be able to use Chromebooks in school, though other devices would be reconnected in the coming week. "While there is more work to do, we are well on our way back to normal operations," Scott said. Providence Public School District spokesperson Jay Wegimont previously told Target 12 that the district had been in touch with state and federal law authorities as a result of "irregular activity” first detected on the network on Sept. 11. Last week, Mayor Brett Smiley told Target 12 that Providence's infrastructure is separate from the school department’s, but the city blocked a connection on an accounting software to secure the city's computers.
