CANTON, S.D. (KELO) — As summer turns into autumn, local pumpkin patches are gearing up for their fall activities. The Gannon family at Riverview Christmas Tree Farm is gearing up for their Pumpkin Festival. "So starting probably the end of July, we start getting things out, start prepping, start contacting vendors, family members and friends that are going to work. I mean, it takes several months to get set up," Owner of Riverview Christmas Tree Farm, Todd Gannon said. While Christmas trees are part of their namesake, pumpkins are what attract people here this time of the year. "So this year we grew, I think, 38 different varieties of pumpkins. All of our pumpkins are grown right here on the farm by me and my boys and my wife," Todd said. While it's called a pumpkin festival, there are many other attractions at the event, including hayrides, pumpkin painting, farm animals and more. However this year, the Gannons have added new attractions, including the pumpkin cannon. 18-year-old charged with weapon on school grounds Saturday That's just one of the new things here at the Pumpkin Festival. "The apple cannons people will actually get to shoot themselves. We also brought in the mining sluice, which my kids already love it. They've been mining for gemstones for weeks now," Owner of Riverview Christmas Tree Farm, Shari Gannon said. Making the pumpkin festival a great fall activity for everybody. "The pumpkin festival is really just four weekends for families to come out and enjoy fall weather and participate in lots of activities and of course, pick out some pumpkins," Todd said. The pumpkin festival starts this weekend and runs for 4 weekends. Click here for more information on the Pumpkin Festival.
