INDIANAPOLIS -- A man is recovering in the hospital after being rescued from a retention pond near an apartment complex on the far east side of Indianapolis Monday night. According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, multiple units were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. to the 3600 block of Wingate Court, the listed address for Spanish Oak Apartments, in response to reports of an adult male being submerged in the water. IFD said the first unit arrived at 6:15 p.m. and immediately began working to locate the submerged individual and speaking with witnesses on the scene. One of the witnesses assisted the divers by sharing where they last saw the missing male in the water. The victim was believed to have been under the water for around 15 minutes when 911 was initially called, according to IFD. IFD added that witnesses told first responders on the scene that two people had been fishing at the retention pond when one of the men reportedly went into the water but did not resurface. The IFD Tactical Dive Team eventually recovered the 27-year-old man around 6:28 p.m. after discovering the missing person around 20 to 25 feet from the shore. The victim was found 10 to 12 feet below the surface and brought them above water where medics immediately began resuscitation and CPR attempts. IFD noted the victim is believed to have been in the water for around 34 minutes before their rescue, IFD noted. The man was transported to Methodist Hospital for medical treatment. As of this article's publication, IFD has not provided his last known condition.
