INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested seven people while responding to a string of weekend street takeovers. A post on the agency's Facebook page indicates IMPD also towed at least four vehicles, seized two firearms, issued one summons and wrote more than 40 tickets while responding to illegal street racing and spinning events. "Let me be clear, we will not tolerate any behavior that puts officer safety or the safety of our community at risk," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey wrote in a prepared statement regarding the street takeovers. "We will continue to investigate these incidents thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable for their actions." On its social media accounts, IMPD published updates on its response to street takeovers that took place on both Friday and Saturday. On Saturday alone, IMPD arrested three people and recovered one firearm. IMPD's response to this weekend's street takeovers were part of the agency's renewed push to break up the dangerous car meet-ups. Two weekends ago, IMPD officers were attacked and their squad cars were damaged during street takeovers. Those incidents resulted in the arrests of nine individuals. IMPD has received additional help breaking up street takeovers from Indiana State Police. Over the weekend, ISP used a helicopter to help IMPD dampen illegal street racing in the Circle City. A new proposal designed to curb street takeovers is slated to be unveiled on Monday. If approved by the City-County Council and signed by Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, the proposal will allow IMPD to fine those participating in street takeovers and impound vehicles used in illegal drag racing events. As of this article's publication, no additional information on the street takeovers that happened over the weekend had been made available.
