JAY COUNTY, Ind. -- Jay County Jr. and Sr. High School students will be learning outside of the building this week after an EF-1 tornado did significant damage to the roof of the building. The tornado tore up the school and then crossed IN-67 and ran through the homes on the other side of the road. Landspout tornado confirmed near Muncie as part of Sunday’s storms Kyle Love was on his couch watching football when the harmless rain turned into a dangerous storm. ”I heard more of a jet engine type of noise," Love said. "It was a very high pitched, whistling type of noise." We’re in Jay County where a tornado passed through last night. Jay County Jr.-Sr. High School has significant damage and a home across the street lost its roof. So far, we haven’t heard about any injuries. @FOX59 @CBS4Indy pic.twitter.com/E8WRUuz5VJ— Eric Graves (@ReporterEric) September 23, 2024 Love is a part-time firefighter and got a weather alert on his pager. That was the only warning he got before he sat up and looked out his front window. ”The entire front of my property was like a gray cloud of spinning stuff," Love said. As Love went to lay down flat on his couch and cover his neck, like he'd been trained, the storm was already ripping off the roof of his house. "Next thing you know, I heard the roof pop off," Love said. "It literally sounded like the roof popped off. It's a weird sound that I could never recreate but the entire roof of my main house came off." With the roof off, the storm came in. "It was like getting sand blasted, because it had blown in insulation and it was raining at the same time," Love said. What remained of his roof and ceiling was also then falling down onto him. ”As soon as the ceiling starts to fall, you don't know where its coming from, you don't know how much, you don't know what," Love said. He managed to crawl out of his home before he could be seriously injured by the falling debris, creating his firefighter training and instincts for taking over. ”It's good knowing how to orient myself in a room from the fire training I've gotten," Love said. "Being able to know where I'm at, take a deep breath and say, 'You're going to get out.'" As he began to survey the damage, he saw where the tornado hit right before his home - the high school across the street. Love has been a teacher there for more than a decade. ”The school is horrible right now," Love said. "The entire Junior High. A lot of the rooftop units have been removed or obviously damaged. It's sad to see a school, especially during homecoming week this week, sustain damage." We're getting our first look inside Jay County Jr. and Sr. High School. These pictures show significant damage to the roof and ceiling with water damage in hallways, classrooms and a library. Students will be learning from home the rest of the week. @FOX59 @CBS4Indy pic.twitter.com/UoXuddqgEO— Eric Graves (@ReporterEric) September 23, 2024 Jay Sr. and Jr. High School will have an E-Learning day Tuesday and then be on Remote Learning for the rest of the week. The Homecoming parade and game on Friday will go on as scheduled. According to a post on the school system Facebook page, the HVAC system servicing the entire school is down and likely will be for the rest of the week.
