(WANE) -- While Garrett history is commonly associated with its ties to the railroad, the city also contains many ancillary artifacts of the past that are still in use today. In 1983, the Garrett Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in order to highlight and preserve many of the homes, churches and government buildings that came about as a result of the railroad. In Your Hometown: Silver Screen Cinema back open after a decade While the boundaries of the Garrett Historic District comprise all of downtown and a sizable portion of the surrounding neighborhoods, 26 "representative properties" that define the "cultural and social development [of Garrett] fostered by the railroad."
