(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.) — More than 2,000 runners competed in the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon on Saturday, Sept. 22, and Sunday, Sept. 23, one of the toughest marathons in the U.S. The Ascent, held Saturday, covers 13.3 miles from Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit, climbing 7,800 vertical feet on Barr Trail. The Marathon, run on Sunday, follows the same route but includes a descent back to the start. However, due to weather, the Marathon was shortened on Sunday, with the turnaround point at Barr Camp. RELATED STORY: Snow on Pikes Peak shortens marathon route The Pikes Peak Marathon, founded in 1956, is the oldest continuously held U.S. marathon. The trail’s grade varies, but the ascent is a tough, uphill climb. Narrow and winding, the trail includes sharp turns and elevation changes, with decreasing oxygen making it even more challenging. Athletes must pass a qualifying event to register and making it to the starting line is an accomplishment in itself. Finishing in the top 5 is an exceptional achievement for marathon runners worldwide. Below are photos and the runners with the top times in each event.
