NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) -- A warning for North Dakota hunters. Game and Fish says it's monitoring deer herds living in the southwestern part of the state for Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, also known as EHD. The agency reports that some deer in northern Stark County that died tested positive for the virus. Deer can get it from gnats carrying the virus. Whooping cranes begin their fall migration through North Dakota Game and Fish says there have been about 20 reports of deer dying from EHD in western North Dakota. Veterinarians say they're hopeful the recent cold temperatures have killed some of the gnats, but add that it could take a series of hard frosts to eliminate them. Although EHD primarily affects white-tailed deer, it can infect other big game animals. Game and Fish adds that the virus does not affect humans. Close Thanks for signing up!
