WEST FARGO, ND (KXNET) — Special Olympics North Dakota has announced that West Fargo High School is receiving national banner recognition for its efforts to provide inclusive sports for students with and without intellectual disabilities. The school met 10 national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy, and respect, which were developed by leaders from Special Olympics and the education community. “This award highlights the remarkable efforts and achievements of West Fargo HighSchool in advancing inclusion and acceptance of people with all abilities within aschool,” said the President/CEO of Special Olympics North Dakota, Nancy Hanson. “Theirsuccess reflects not only their commitment to their students, but also their broaderimpact on the inclusion landscape." First Ms. Wheelchair North Dakota competes nationally The main activities required to meet the standards for the banner include Special Olympics Unified Sports where students with and without disabilities compete as teammates, as well as school engagement and inclusive youth leadership. They must also have a plan to sustain these activities in the future. 20 North Dakota schools are participating in Unified Champion Schools programming, and 10,000 are participating nationwide.
