Maybe head coach Kevin Stefanski should find a handyman on a home improvement website, because a lot about the Browns needs fixing after three games. Let’s start with the offensive line. Stefanski on a Zoom call Sept. 23 said Pro Bowl right guard Wyatt Teller will miss “multiple weeks” with a knee injury suffered on field goal protection during the 21-15 loss to the Giants on Sept. 22 at Huntington Bank Field. The Browns are contemplating putting Teller on injured reserve, which would mean he would have to miss a minimum of four games. Continuing on that theme, Stefanski had no update on the health of injured left tackle Jedrick Wills (knee) or swing tackle James Hudson (shoulder). Both were scheduled for an MRI on Sept. 23. Stefanski said defensive end Myles Garrett is “day to day” with a foot injury. Watson, after being sacked eight times and hit a total of 17 times (he was also hit 17 times by the Cowboys in the opener) on Sept 22, hinted the coaches did not prepare the Browns’ pass protectors for the pressure and blitzes the Giants applied. “The (the Giants) switched up the game plan,” Watson said. “I think you got to give their D.C. Shane (Bowen) a lot of credit for doing something different that we… of course we were expecting pressure, but as much as they brought it, you just got to prepare for the worst. “And they did a good job of trying to create some mismatches and different confusion up front to get us off our timing in the passing game.” Stefanski had this response on Sept. 23: “We’re only three games into these things, so breaking tendencies is a big part of offenses and defenses when you’re game planning…There are looks that you often see that you don’t game plan for, especially early in the season, and then you just have to make the adjustment in-game.” Moving onto third down… The Browns, statistically, are the worst third-down team in the league. They have moved the chains on just 8 of 43 third-down situations — a paltry 18.60 conversion rate. They have had more fourth-down opportunities (11) than any team in the league. They have converted seven of them, but one reason they lost to the Giants is Jameis Winston was stopped for no gain on a quarterback sneak on third-and-one from the Cleveland 29 with 4:40 to play and the Browns trailing, 21-15. Watson was sacked for zero yards on a run-pass option on the next play. “We have to be better (on third down),” Stefanski said. “You can be better on first and second down to help yourself on third down. I don’t think we’ve been good enough on first and second down. Been in some tough down and distances, or in that case, distances on third down. So that’s just a matter of playing better as an offense, but there’s always things that we’re looking at to try to give our guys a chance.” Then there’s Watson. Watson has a passer rating of 71.4. The only quarterbacks with a lower rating are rookies Caleb Williams of the Bears and Bo Nix of the Broncos plus second-year players Anthony Richardson of the Colts and Bryce Young of the Panthers. Young was benched after two games this season and Richardson made only four starts in 2023 before a shoulder injury ended his rookie season. Watson against the Giants had his best game of 2024 — 21 of 37 for 196 yards and two touchdown passes to Amari Cooper with no interceptions. But he also overthrew Elijah Moore from the Giants 30 on a pass that could have resulted in a touchdown to give the Browns the lead in the fourth quarter. “It’s just a missed throw, missed opportunity,” Watson said in his postgame news conference. Browns tight Jordan Akins was targeted seven times and caught four passes for 29 yards on Sept. 22. He is getting more opportunities than normal because starting tight end David Njoku missed the last two games with an ankle injury. Stefanski is unsure whether Njoku will be available for the Sept. 29 game against the Raiders in Las Vegas. Atkins played with Watson in Houston from 2018-20, He was on a Zoom call Sept. 23 and said slow starts are nothing new for Watson. “It’s nothing that he’s not used to,” Akins said. “Back in Houston, we started real slow. I remember, in 2018, we started out oh-and-three. We flipped it around and won (nine) straight. So we just have to make some adjustments. We have to keep him positive and just hopefully he makes some big time plays for us.” The Browns have never been 1-2 under Stefanski. They were 2-1 each year from 2020-23.
