Beaumont had a barometer on the opposite touchline Sept. 23 in the form of Solon visiting St. Angela Merici Field. The Blue Streaks wanted nothing more than to see where they stood against a very good Comets’ side. They found out. Now comes the importance of the response for a side with a bright present and future. Sophie Ryan and Mayah Rothstein each netted a brace as Solon recorded a thorough 5-0 win. In the process, Beaumont was dealt its first setback, falling to 9-1-1. “Like I just told the girls, because I know myself included with the girls as well, if we want to make a long postseason run, and I told them basically starting from regional semifinals on, that’s the caliber of the teams that we’re going to see day in and day out,” Blue Streaks coach Tristan Lyles said. “So I think it’s good to not be surprised when we get there and kind of run into a side like that. “All credit to Solon. They have brilliant girls, kind of all across the field there, and they played super well. They’re super well-coached. A little bit of a rough day at the office. We’ll take tomorrow, kind of work on some of those things that didn’t go so well today and then hopefully put a couple away against Holy Name on (Sept. 25).” All three of the opening-40 goals for Solon (7-2), now 4-0 vs. News-Herald coverage area sides including three wins vs. three top-five Top of the Crop sides in Madison, Mayfield and, now, Beaumont, came off set pieces. First it was Mia Patriarco in the 13th minute off corner kick aftermath. Then it was Rothstein, a freshman, slotting a free kick from distance off the crossbar in the 15th. And to finish off the sequence, it was Ryan off another corner in the 24th with a far post header off Rothstein service to make it 3-0. After this comprehensive result, Lyles understands how vital the response from his side will be. “I can see it all in their faces how frustrated they were,” Lyles said. “Rightly so, just because I know we didn’t play to the caliber that we can. But I know, after knowing them and working with them for almost four months at this point, I know who they all are as players and where their hearts and heads are.” THE SCORE Solon 5, Beaumont 0
