David Spotton is resigning his position as mayor of Eastlake, effective Sept. 23. Prior to assuming the mayoral position in January after former Eastlake Mayor and Safety Director Dennis Morley died, Spotton was on Eastlake City Council for eight years. Additionally, for 27 years, he has been a full-time police officer at Lakeland Community College and coordinator of the motorcycle safety program for 24 of those years. According to his resignation letter, he said he can no longer serve the residents without an all-in team approach from council, adding that they are more interested in attacking him rather than moving the city forward. “It has come to pass there are people on this council more interested in their own agenda, getting attention and Facebook likes rather than the greater, long-term good for the residents, businesses, employees and visitors to our city,” Spotton said in his letter. The News-Herald reached out to Spotton; a response was not returned immediately. In the letter he expressed that he has given the city nearly nine years, eight years as a council person and now eight months as the mayor, and is proud of his record, which was able to be accomplished with the help of a good team, which included some of council alongside Morley. In 2016, when Spotton was elected, the city was not in good shape financially, he said. With a great team led by Morley, the city corrected the downward trajectory of its finances, made the compensation more in line to industry standards in all departments and replaced manpower and equipment that had been gutted in past administrations. “We also invested in quality of life projects like the splash park, Bora’s landing park, ramp park, Eastlake sign and the new digital sign,” Spotton said in his letter. Spotton said he will not let members of council continue to try to destroy his lifelong work and reputation of doing the right thing with honor and integrity. “These people do not live by a code and don’t have any interest in being part of a winning team,” he said. “I stepped up in the time of loss and need for the greater good of the city. This is a sacrifice of my time with my family and friends that, without the team approach, I am no longer willing to make.” “I will not be party to the circus that these selfish people are engaging in,” Spotton’s letter continues. “It has been an honor to follow Mayor Morley and serve as mayor. I need to thank Judy Moran, all the staff, directors and west end mayors, Mayor (Michael) Vanni of Willowick, Mayor (Robert) Fiala of Willoughby, Mayor (Joe) Sakacs of Wickliffe and Mayor (Chris) Hallum of Willoughby Hills, who have been a great help while in the mayor’s office.”
