TAMPA, Fla. — The Broncos’ first win of the 2024 season is in the books. Before they get a chance at No. 2 on Sunday at the New York Jets, a unique work week is on deck. The team stayed here Sunday night and then Monday set out for White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., where they will spend the week and practice at the Greenbrier Resort. Head coach Sean Payton said Monday morning that everything timing-wise stays on schedule for the Broncos before they head to New Jersey. Meetings are at the same time. Practice is at the same time. Only the location is different. That means Denver is tasked with using a dominant 26-7 outing against the Buccaneers on Sunday as a springboard and doing so from the road. “It gets us rolling in a big way, especially being on the road for (this week),” safety Brandon Jones told reporters Monday morning. “We had a lot of execution in all three phases. I can’t say that we’re surprised because we put in the work and we know what we’re capable of doing once we’re all on the same page. “It was really a great team win.” In a league as driven by particular matchups as the NFL is, the schematic details of a plan one week might be virtually immaterial the next. But what the Broncos can take with them from Florida when they head up the East Coast, they say, is more basic than execution against a certain look or a wrinkle that led to a big play. “We have a really young team and I think that until they experience what they had today, you don’t really understand how hard it is to win in this league,” veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton said after the game. “I talked to the guys after the game and told them, lock this memory in. Know how this feeling feels and replicate it. We have to find a way to replicate this and continue to have this feeling. “Because this feeling is 1,000 times better than what it feels like to come up short.” Payton liked the way Denver responded Sunday when they lost a chance at a first-half knockout punch. Up 17-0 and driving, Broncos running back Javonte Williams fumbled. Instead of potentially taking an even more commanding lead, Denver allowed the Bucs to go down the field, score and get within 17-7 with 1 minute, 50 seconds left in the first half. Denver, though, mounted a nine-play, 50-yard march in the two-minute situation and pushed the lead back to 13 before halftime. We had the fumble and then we had the touchdown, but we were able to punch back. I think that’s important relative to the momentum and maybe, obviously, we didn’t do that as well in Seattle.” Now the challenge is to carry it forward. The Jets’ defense is far more disruptive than Tampa’s, especially considering the Bucs played without standouts Vita Vea and Antoine Winfield Jr., and are led offensively by future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. If the Broncos fly back home Sunday night after a long stint on the road at 2-2 with a pair of divisional home games on tap, the season will feel a whole lot different from when they left. “I say it all the time: I wasn’t born with no quit button,” Broncos defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, a former Jet, said after Sunday’s win. “I can speak for the team and say the same thing.” Want more Broncos news?
