WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Textron Aviation union workers are on strike. KSN News was on the scene of the picket lines at the Beechcraft plant in east Wichita on Monday morning, hours after the strike started. On Saturday, the Machinists union voted to strike despite the negotiating committee's recommendation to approve the company's new contract offer. Workers on the picket line do not believe the contract is fair and are willing to stay off the job. "I'm willing to go for months. I have no problems drinking water and eating ramen and nothing else. I plan on getting a side job until then. I mean, other places are catching up on pay," Jacob, one of the striking workers, said. Textron Aviation said they made every effort to avoid a strike, saying, "... as would be expected of any responsible business, the company has prepared for this scenario to ensure the business continues to operate for customers." Machinists union members reject Textron contract, vote to strike The company told KSN News it is committed to collaborating on a contract that benefits all parties. Newman University Associate Professor Larry Straub says there are similarities between the Textron Aviation workers' decision to strike and the Boeing strike. In both cases, union members overwhelmingly agreed to the strike even though union leadership recommended approving the contracts. Straub says inflation plays a role. "Whether it's correct or not, a lot of people just do not feel like, even though they've been getting raises, even though they've been, many times, been getting quote-unquote cost of living adjustments, many folks just do not feel like those have kept up with the actual cost of living," he said. If the strikes continue over a month, issues could form in the supply chains.
