RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Tonight, Richmond City Council will consider a crucial agreement aimed at advancing the Greater Richmond Transit Company’s (GRTC) North-South Pulse project. The City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 at City Hall, where leaders will discuss the implications of the agreement and gather community feedback on this transformative transportation initiative. This initiative is designed to enhance public transportation in the region, and city leaders are set to execute a Standard Project Administration Agreement with the Central Virginia Transportation Authority that will provide essential funding. Currently, GRTC operates an East-West Pulse route along Broad Street, but the new North-South line will extend from the Brookhill Azalea Shopping Center in Henrico to District 60 in Chesterfield. The route will run through Downtown Richmond, across the 9th Street Bridge, using Commerce to Hull Street, Belt Boulevard and Midlothian Turnpike.  This expansion is part of a broader effort to improve connectivity and accessibility for residents. City officials emphasize the need for funding to bring the multimillion-dollar project to fruition. The agreement will outline specific allocations for various expenses, including driver salaries, new bus stop constructions and the design of the new bus routes. People that can't make it to the meeting tonight, are still submit their feedback on the planned route through an online form until September 30. GRTC leaders say a new route is necessary because its current ridership has surpassed the existing bus service. A new line will connect more people to jobs and opportunities in the region, as well as increase reliability and frequency, and decrease transfer time. GRTC has hosted three public meetings to gather community feedback on the proposed route. These meetings were held in areas where this future bus route will run.
