PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence teacher charged with sexual assault and possession of child pornography will be held without bail. 50-year-old Joseph Gannon was arrested and charged with first degree sexual assault and one count of producing/transferring child pornography on Friday. According to the Providence District website, Gannon was an 8th grade science teacher. The district sent a letter to families of students at the school that said Gannon was placed on administrative leave and a suspected child abuse or neglect report was filed with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families. Colonel Oscar Perez told ABC6 that a victim of Gannon had came into the police station with the allegation, which led to his arrest. “This is going back, I mean the victim now is an adult. Like I stated she came into the police station and we immediately had detectives from the Special Victims Unit interview and meet with her and yes we were able to take the teacher into custody,” he said. A judge determined that Gannon would be held without bail. His next court date is September 30. The judge ordered also ordered a no contact order. Categories: News
