Location: Roxian Theatre on Chartiers Avenue in McKees RocksFeatured guest: Jordan Montgomery, regional marketer for the Roxian Theatre and Live Nation (Live Nation manages the Roxian.)3 things that surprised me:1. When the Roxian Theatre opened in 1929, it was a 1,500-seat vaudeville theater. Vaudeville fell out of style just a few years after the theater opened, though, and the venue transitioned into a movie house. The Roxian screened movies for nearly eight decades.2. Down a flight of steps from the theater is the artist green room where musicians and comedians can relax before a show. The new space includes a living room area, kitchen, a fancy bathroom and a listening corner with a record player. In years past the basement was home to the Third Dimension Club and, before that, a bowling alley.3. After its time as a movie theater, the Roxian became a banquet hall called The Emerald Room. In this era, much of the theater’s ornate decor was covered with drop ceilings and false walls. The building then sat empty from 2004 to 2017 before a major renovation turned the McKees Rocks landmark into what we see today. One thing that didn’t make the final cut: In addition to hosting concerts and comedy shows, the theater is also available to rent for weddings, holiday parties and reunions.Want more Yinzer Backstage Pass? Check out our visit to the Squirrel Hill Tunnel where we descended into the basement and climbed to the fan room. The post Inside the many lives of the Roxian Theatre appeared first on NEXTpittsburgh.
