INDIANAPOLIS -- A former Republican congressional candidate has been charged with intimidation after he reportedly encouraged violence against an attorney and political commentator via social media. According to court documents filed in August but recently unsealed in Marion County, Gabriel Whitley, a former candidate also known as "Honest Gabe" has been charged with one count of intimidation - threat is to commit a forcible felony, a Level 6 felony. Gabriel Whitley Most recently, Whitley ran as a Republican candidate for Indiana's seventh district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In May, Whitley garnered a little more than 13% of the vote and did not win the nomination. Pace died in March, prior to the May primary election. This caused the Indiana Republican Party to select John Schmitz as its nominee for the seat, going against incumbent U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, D-District 7, the Democratic nominee. According to reports from WEHT, a sister station to FOX59/CBS4, Whitley was also a former mayoral candidate in Evansville in 2023. On July 23, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department took a report from Abdul Shabazz, a local attorney and journalist, according to court documents. Shabazz has appeared as a panelist on IN Focus, a national and local politics program that airs on FOX59 and CBS 4. IMPD continues weekend crackdown on street takeovers The court documents said that Shabazz reportedly told police that he was "receiving unwelcome communications via social media that have escalated to violence" from Whitley. Shabazz told police that Whitley's posts included statements like shooting him "like a pig" and raiding Shabazz's house. Whitley also reportedly shared a photo of a bloody individual from the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump and said "we should do this to (Shabazz)." Whitley also reportedly sent a photo of Shabazz's home, as well as his personal car out to his followers. As of Monday morning, Whitley has more than 1,470 followers on his public X account, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Court docs: Columbus man charged with attempted murder after shooting at ex-wife "Mr. Shabazz is unsure of what Mr. Whitley is capable of doing and is not only worried about his safety, but the safety of his family, wife and other love ones at (his home)," the documents read. Police linked Whitley's X account to his email, as well as his Ballotpedia page for his May primary campaign, the documents read. IMPD also said that they compared Whitley's photo from his campaign to his BMV record and confirmed it was a match. According to court documents, a status of counsel hearing for Whitley's case is scheduled in Marion County Court for Oct. 10. According to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office, Hoosiers are able to register to vote for the 2024 General Election through Oct. 7. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 5.
