GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Another weekend, with no homicides. It’s a trend we are seeing more of this year, with homicide numbers almost cut in half, compared to this time last year. In Greensboro, there are 28 homicides so far this year, compared to 54 at this same time last year. In Winston-Salem, the city has also seen a decrease, currently, there are 20 homicides, compared to 36 at this same time last year. It’s the same story in High Point, there are 3 homicides this year, compared to 10 at the same time in 2023. 7-year-old boy shot while sitting outside of apartment in Burlington dies There is no simple answer as to why violent crime is down across the Triad, but Greensboro police say, it’s a team effort. “We don’t want to get comfortable just because we are seeing a decrease in homicides, we want to keep our efforts going, continue to build on that, continue to partner with our federal partners, the U.S. Attorney’s office, the Guilford county D.A.’s office, that makes a difference with those partnerships to hold individuals accountable,” said Asst. Chief Ric Alston from Greensboro Police. It’s also a partnership with the community, Greensboro Police remind you, that everyone plays a part in reducing crime and keeping the community safe. If you see something, make sure you say something. On the department’s side, they have a few efforts that contributed to fewer homicides this year. The real-time crime center is up and running, with cameras all over the city for police to monitor at all times. Another key piece is the violent crimes reduction team, they only work with these types of crimes. The whole goal is to investigate shootings into dwellings or firearm discharges to hold people accountable before their crimes turn deadly. Asst. Chief Alston said taking the time to investigate those more minor crimes has really paid off. “We can always do better, I will put it that way when it comes to homicides…we got to keep pushing to get the numbers down even further, but I am proud of our efforts and we want to continue to do those things and build on what we have accomplished,” Asst. Chief Alston said. It’s not just homicides, the city of Greensboro has seen an overall decrease in assaults as well. The department has been more strategic about where they place patrol officers to also help cut down on crime. “I think we are doing good, but like I said, when you have one homicide that is too many so I don’t want to sit here and say that I am happy because we still have 28 homicides this year but I am happy with our efforts to reduce violent crime and reduce the number of homicides that we saw from last year,” Asst. Chief Alston said.
