(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Dozens of people gathered outside of the El Paso County Jail on Sunday afternoon to protest inmate rights after a person died last year inside his cell. The sheriff's office says it continues to support peaceful protests. Family members attended the protest out of concern that the autopsy was incorrect. On December 26, 2023, 44-year-old Michael Wrobel was found unconscious inside of his cell and later pronounced dead.On Sunday forty people gathered in a peaceful protest, his family is questioning the results of the autopsy and are convinced he was medically neglected. "There's more deaths in CJC (Criminal Justice Center) than all the maximum security prisons in Colorado, to me, that's a red flag," said Autumn Lachendro wife of Wrobel. Michael Wrobel or 'Denny' as his family calls him, was an inmate at the El Paso County Jail serving a 115-day sentence. Inmate death at El Paso County Jail day after Christmas "Denny wasn't perfect, and this place isn't made for comfort. We're aware of this, But at the same time, you know, we're humans. Everybody makes mistakes, and nobody deserves cruelty or neglect," Alex Bolte, a friend of Wrobel. His family says he was nearly done serving his sentence before he died. "My daughter's behind us, and she doesn't get a chance to meet her new, improved dad," added Lachendro. With only nine days left in his sentence, the family says he was found unresponsive and not breathing in a single-occupancy cell just before 7:45 a.m. on December 26. "He was medically neglected inside the CJC, and his 115-day sentence turned into a death sentence," said Bolte. His wife says that the autopsy is not correct and her husband was medically neglected while inside the jail. "He had fought most of the battle in there without the right meds, without the right food, without the right nutrition, and he just couldn't make it to the end," she said. Now all she is hoping for is justice and to make sure this does not happen again. "I just want awareness that if you're in there, you're sick or have a disease, that you deserve every right to go to the hospital. Whether you're in there because you've done something wrong, you still deserve to go to the hospital just like anybody else," she said. The Colorado Sun reports between 2020 and 2023 at least fifteen people died at the jail. "Denny's just one of the many that unfortunately have passed away here at CJC, and for similar reasons, you know, and we're trying to stop that," said Bolte. Family members say they are suing the sheriff's department and El Paso County while getting a second autopsy. Fox21 reached out to the El Paso County Sheriff's office and they said, "We do not provide comment on pending litigation." "This can't just keep happening. We're putting our foot down and we're definitely going to full trial on this," said Lachendro. Recently on September 16, the El Paso County Sheriff's office reported a man was found unresponsive in his cell and passed away at the hospital. However, evidence suggests that the man attempted to take his own life.
