CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two officers and a suspect were transported to a hospital with injuries after an exchange of gunfire in south Charlotte, according to a news release. The release states that on the night of September 22, officers were dispatched to E. Arrowood Road in response to an assault with a deadly weapon call. CMPD says a suspect vehicle was identified and a traffic stop was initiated which resulted in a suspect drawing a firearm and an exchange of gunfire ensued. The preliminary information claims one officer was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, one officer was transported to an area hospital for precautionary measures and a suspect was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A firearm was recovered on the scene. An investigation is active and ongoing. The Internal Affairs Bureau is conducting a separate, but parallel investigation due to the incident involving an officer. Charlotte Mayor Vi Kyles released the following statement: “My heart is heavy as I learn of the officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop in our Steele Creek community last night. One of our Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers was seriously injured in the line of duty while protecting and serving our city. To the injured officer and their family: Our entire city stands with you during this difficult time. We are praying for your swift and full recovery. At this time, we are reminded our the risks our officers take very day to keep Charlotte safe. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will provide updates as appropriate. For now, let us focus on supporting our officers during this challenging time.”
